Differences Between Invisalign and Metal Braces

Clear aligners are a popular way to precisely move your teeth to help you achieve your perfect smile.

As the largest supporter of Invisalign providers in New Jersey, Dimensional Dental helps hundreds of patients with their Invisalign treatment.

But why Invisalign? What are the major differences between Invisalign and traditional metal braces? Dr. Eric Segall, Orthodontist, helps us to answer those questions.

Invisalign is much more comfortable than traditional metal braces.  They feature clear, removable aligners that are much more aesthetically pleasing. You are also able to remove them while eating. Since the aligners are trimmed to each patients gum line, they are more comfortable. There are no brackets or wires to cut your lips or poke your cheeks. This can also help save on emergency visits to the dentists as metal braces can have brackets fall off or break.

Another difference is the ease of hygiene. Since Invisalign is removable, they are easier to clean. You can still floss and brush as your normally would to keep your smile healthy.

Beyond helping patients achieve generally straighter teeth, Invisalign also helps correct serious orthodontic issues such as crowded teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite and gaps between the teeth. And, treatment time is usually significantly less – up to 50% less than traditional metal braces.  Invisalign cases can be as short as 5 months for cosmetic treatments to 24 months for complicated orthodontic issues.

Cost is another factor when choosing between Invisalign and traditional metal braces. Costs tend to be less with Invisalign, because treatment time is less and there are less frequent visits to the dentist’s office.  In addition, dental insurance typically covers Invisalign at the same level as traditional metal braces.

Ultimately, you are your dentist will determine which treatment is right for you. Most people can see if they’re eligible for Invisalign with a quick, three-minute exam.
